Sunniside Public Realm, Sunderland

Client:
Sunderland City Council
Location: Sunderland
Contract Value: £1.25 million
Contract Period: August 2009 until October 2010

This high profile Public Realm project is situated within Sunderland’s busy city centre and includes work to some of the main routes through the city. The works comprised road and pavement renewal; taking up and relaying of existing kerbing, setts and flagging; provision and lay of new granite and Yorkstone kerbing, setts and flagging; resurfacing of tarmac roads; installation of new street lighting, signage and street furniture; associated drainage works.

One of the major restraints for the project included maintaining access for service vehicles, buses and pedestrians which required a significant road traffic management exercise. Extensive consultation exercises were held with local businesses and residents affected by the works to arrive at a successful phasing strategy which minimised the impact on the local area and maintained access to dwellings and business premises. This strategy required the works to be divided into 26 sections with some sections running concurrently with one another. The works required ongoing co-ordination with utility companies for services diversions and highways and other departments.

Excellent communication was key on this project, both with the local community to maintain positive relationships and also the Local Authority Highways and Environment Departments and bus companies. This has been achieved through a series of public meetings, letter drops and media advertisements. Regular weekly consultation meetings were held to discuss current and forthcoming works to enable all parties to plan how to mitigate the inevitable disruptive effects of the works.

Lumsden & Carroll worked with the Client and Design Team to achieve a ‘Very Good’ CEEQUAL Whole Project Award, awarded in July 2011.
