Household Waste Recovery Centre Prudhoe

Client:
Sita UK Ltd
Location: Prudhoe
Contract Value: £0.9 million
Contract Period: January 2008 until June 2008

The extension and refurbishment of the existing household waste recycling centre at Prudhoe was part of a larger £5m contract for SITA UK for their Northumberland PFI Scheme.

This Design & Build contract was subject to a rigorous Client / Operational Review System to ensure all schemes were acceptable to all parties involved.  The works at Prudhoe HWRC consisted of phased working with a tight restricting programme, reducing the closure period of the existing facility.

The majority of the works were carried out whilst keeping the existing facility running as normal. An agreed time for the closure was arranged with the local authority and all works were carried out to the time restraint.

The major earthworks were carried out to reduce excavate and remodel the levels to ensure minimal off-site of waste materials.  The existing land was on top of an existing landfill site and a remediation strategy was implemented including a differential settlement membrane and clean clay capping.

During this process the existing gas extraction pipework was moved to the extremities of the new site footprint.  A new access road was widened and constructed in phases to allow the existing facility to continue to operate.  The new entrance was created under Section 278 Agreements.  The site included insitu concrete retaining wall 95m long with access steps and access landings to the new skips both in insitu concrete.  The associated drainage scheme involved a foul water pumping station and off site connection.

The surface water including separators and twin storage tanks was installed with a positive drainage connection.  The site was securely fenced including vehicle and pedestrian access gates.  The concrete slabs consisted of approx 4,000m² and tarmac access roads of approx 2,000m².  The amenity building traditional built measured 25m x 10m with pitched roof and contained the controlling services.  The site services included new electric supply, BT/IT connection, water connection, street lighting and separator alarms.
