Recent historical flooding in the village of Belford has led to eleven properties being placed on Northumbrian Water’s DG5 “At Risk” Register for internal flooding and six properties on the DG5 “At Risk” Register for external flooding due to sewer incapacity.

The scope of works included over 1,500m of sewer installation with diameters ranging from 300mm – 1,050mm.

Project specific details included:

• Sewer upsizing offline and associated connections.

• Laying of new combined sewers in fields and highway (300mm).

• 1,050mm diameter on-line storage in Burnside.

• Replacement of Belford Golf Course Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) with a single reinforced chamber including a 6mm static screen and Alpheus Flow Control Unit.

• Replacement of Belford Golf Course CSO Outfall to Belford Burn.

• Turning of live sewer flows.

• Grouting and abandonment of sewers.

• Reinstatement of the site working area.

• Management of flows encountered during the works.

Ground Conditions
Varying ground conditions dictated the use of close boarded and interlocking trench sheets overdriven to cater for loose sand and gravels with a high water table.

Works in Live Highways
The highway is often used as an emergency route should there be an incident on the nearby A1, therefore full road closures were not permitted.  The method of installation and the choice of plant and equipment had to be carefully planned to ensure that vehicle lanes and safety zones were adhered to.
