The Company started in 1972 as a partnership between Jack Lumsden, who was born and bred in Esh Winning, and Tony Carroll, who was born in Tipperary, Ireland.
In its early days, Lumsden & Carroll had a workforce of two: Tony and Jack, and an “office” was set up at Jack Lumsden’s home, to price work in the evenings and sort out paperwork at weekends. The Company rapidly grew with many people from the local area joining the business. This strong bond and local traditions are still very evident within the business with several of the original employees and often third generations of families actively working throughout the Company.
In 1984, Jack and Tony bought their first office at 65/66 Durham Road, Esh Winning. In the mid 1990s it would be extended into 64 Durham Road. By the millennium Lumsden & Carroll had grown to a considerable size and required larger offices and depot to meet growth potential and ambition. This coincided with the formation of the Esh Group and elevation of Brian Manning as the CEO. A multi purpose facility was built at Bowburn, County Durham, offering large office space and purpose built plant yard area.
Lumsden & Carroll rapidly established itself as a major player within the Civil Engineering sector, securing several high profile frameworks with Northumbrian Water Ltd and The Environment Agency (which we still hold today).
Moving forward to 2011, Lumsden & Carroll is now firmly established as one of the largest ‘home grown’ businesses within Northern England and specialist Civil Engineering arm of Esh Construction.
Our operation now spread throughout the North of England with offices in Durham, Cramlington, Leeds and Kendal. We continue to hold several high profile frameworks adding Yorkshire Water and YorCivil to the illustrious list.
Our works now spread through varying sectors with many new and old clients geographically spread throughout the North of England. Over the last 4 decades Lumsden & Carroll Civil Engineering has been through many changes; from its humble roots in Esh Winning, Durham to operating throughout Northern England with several regional offices depots, however some things remain the same. Our strong work ethic, collaborative working approach, dedicated employees and community engagement programmes remain the core of our business.
When Tony & Jack started the business in the early 1970’s they envisaged developing a good local business. Fast forward 40 years with a turnover in excess of £50m and a work force of over 400 employees their dreams have been exceed!! It’s been a fantastic story so far, with still many new exciting chapters still to write…
